EC seeks report on Kolkata airport row

New Delhi/Kolkata: The Election Commission on Monday sought a report on the alleged fracas at the Kolkata airport that led to back-to-back FIRs by Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s wife and the Customs department.

“We have sought a factual report from the district election officer of North 24 Parganas on the matter.

We are looking at the social media angle as well,” additional chief electoral officer of West Bengal Sanjay Basu told reporters.

Banerjee had labelled the Customs charges false and politically motivated.

BJP in New Delhi, however, countered it. Party spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain on Monday said the state government seemed to be working to protect a family, referring to Banerjee, who is CM Mamata Banerjee’s nephew.

Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta, affiliated to BJP, asked why local police entered an area that falls under the jurisdiction of the Customs department. The CM is deliberately trying to provoke a constitutional crisis, he alleged.

In a related development, Abhishek’s lawyer Sanjay Basu complained to the Election Commission against Asansol MP and BJP’s Lok Sabha poll candidate Babul Supriyo for violating the model code of conduct.

Basu also sent a notice to Supriyo urging him to retract his statements within 48 hours or face legal action.
