Edu important even for a famous cricketer: Gavaskar

Jamshedpur: Students of private schools here learnt lessons on cricket, education, career and life from none other than the “Little Master” himself who said, “... education is important even if you are a famous cricket player...”

Speaking at the programme titled “Sunny’s Evenings” organised by the Narbheram Hansraj English School, Sunil Gavaskar said, “There is nothing like education.

My father always wanted me to have a degree but I could not give time. When you are playing in a team and travelling, it is very difficult to study because other boys don’t want to. Still, I somehow managed to complete my degree. I think education is important even if you are a famous cricket player as it gives you the ability to analyse your game.”

Later, the former India captain answered questions from the students who queried how he handled pressure on the pitch and ways to improve batting and bowling. He also narrated funny dressing room anecdotes when asked about facing the toughest bowler in his career. Gavaskar, who was in Steel City to attend a programme at the Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital in Bistupur as a member of its board of trustees, added he is enjoying the third innings of his life as an analyst after being a player and a commentator.

The event was attended by NHES chairperson Nakul Kamani and C Sreenivas, the chairman of the Shri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust.
