Abhishek Bachchan’s latest upcoming release, Kaalidhar Laapata, is a remake of the Tamil movie, Karuppu Durai (KD). It isn’t the first time that Bollywood has sought inspiration from Tamil cinema. In fact, most of the hit south remakes that happen in Bollywood have been adapted from Tamil films. Movies like Aamir Khan's Ghajini and Ajay Devgn's Singham franchise are proof.
So, before watching Abhishek Bachchan’s Kaalidhar Laapata, watch five other Tamil remakes in Bollywood.
‘Kaalidhar Laapata’ is a remake of ‘K. D.’KaalidharLaapata is adapted from K. D. (Karuppudurai), a Tamil comedy drama directed by Madhumita. The Hindi version is also helmed by her. The Tamil movie stars Mu Ramaswamy and Naga Vishal.
K. D. follows Karuppu Durai, an 80-year old man who is bedridden due to a coma. One day, he suddenly wakes up to overhear his family’s plans to kill him by performing an ancient euthanasia ritual. He decided to run away from the only home he has ever known and set out on a directionless path.
Just like K. D., KaalidharLaapata is a heartfelt emotional drama that follows an elderly man who runs away after he finds out that his family plans to abandon him. His life takes a turn when he meets Ballu, an orphaned child whose zest for life rekindles Kaalidhar’s desire for living life to the fullest.
Aamir Khan‘s hit movie Ghajini is a remake of Suriya’s hit Tamil movie with the same name. The action thriller revolves around a wealthy businessman suffering from amnesia who is in pursuit of revenge.
Both versions were directed by AR Murugadoss and turned out to be massive box office successes.
Theri, a 2016 action-thriller helmed by Atlee and featuring Vijay, became a commercial success in Tamil cinema. The Hindi remake, Baby John, starring Varun Dhawan in Vijay’s role, with Keerthy Suresh playing the female lead, received a lukewarm response.
3. ‘Singam’ (Prime Video)
Another Suriya-led Tamil action drama, which was later remade in Hindi by Rohit Shetty with the same title featured Ajay Devgn in the lead role. It became a hit franchise in Bollywood.
The story follows a brave cop who clashes with a corrupt politician Purushottam, which leads to his transfer to Vizag.
4. ‘O Kadhal Kanmani’ (JioHotstar)
Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor ‘s romantic dramaOk Jaanu is a remake of Mani Ratnam’s hit Tamil film, O Kadhal Kanmani. The Tamil version featured Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menon in lead roles.
The 2015 movie is a modern-age romantic drama that delves into the lives of two people who decide to stay in a live-in relationship before going their separate ways.
Mari Selvaraj’s critically acclaimed Pariyerum Perumaltackles the themes of equality. It is currently being remade in Hindi as Dhadak 2. Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri will play the lead roles. It is directed by Shazia Iqbal.
