Does The Idea of You Movie End The Same As The Book?

In the film adaptation of Robinne Lee's popular novel "The Idea of You," released on Prime Video, director Michael Showalter takes a lighter, more hopeful approach to the story's ending compared to its original literary version. The film stars Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine and explores the intense romance between a 40-year-old art gallery owner, Solène Marchand, and a young pop star, Hayes Campbell.

Unlike the novel, where the relationship between Solène and Hayes ends abruptly and with unresolved feelings, the film adaptation provides a glimpse into a more optimistic future for the couple. In the book, Solène ends the relationship due to the strain it puts on her life with her daughter, Isabelle, and despite Hayes' dramatic gesture of quitting his band to be with her, she chooses her daughter's well-being over their relationship. The story concludes with Hayes stopping his attempts to reconnect, leaving a bittersweet taste for readers.

However, in Showalter’s film, after the initial breakup caused by similar pressures, the movie provides a resolution that suggests potential for a reunion. Years after their split, Solène and Hayes have grown individually; Solène's relationship with her daughter stabilises, and Hayes finds success as a solo artist. A surprise encounter on a TV show, where Hayes dedicates a song to Solène, hints at his lingering feelings.

The film concludes on a high note as Hayes, visiting Los Angeles, stops by Solène's gallery. The scene ends with a promising exchange of smiles between them, suggesting a new beginning.

In an interview, Showalter expressed his intention to leave audiences with a sense of hope and upliftment, in contrast to the more melancholic ending of the book. This revised ending has been met with positive reactions, especially from fans who were dissatisfied with the novel's conclusion.
