The live-action adaptation was first unveiled on Sept 22, 2024. Production is being managed by Spoon, and TOHO will oversee distribution nationwide.
Originally released in Japan in 2007, the three-part anime film follows Tono Takaki’s evolving relationship with his childhood friend, Shinohara Akari.
The first segment depicts Takaki’s determination to traverse a snowbound landscape for one final meeting with Akari after her family relocates. The second segment explores Takaki’s high school years, during which he remains preoccupied with Akari while unaware of classmate Kanae’s affections. The final segment portrays Takaki in adulthood, as he struggles with career and personal relationships while memories of Akari continue to surface.
Shinkai served as director, screenwriter, storyboard artist, producer, art director, and sound director on the original film. Composer Tenmon provided the music.
