Glamorous outside, panic inside: Vikrant Massey's confession on pressure on newcomers for wearing designer clothes on rent at Bollywood parties

While today, he might be known for his versatile acting range, Vikrant Massey was once a struggler, trying to get noticed by producers and directors. In a candid chat with Rhea Chakraborty, the ‘12th Fail’ actor admitted he once spent beyond his budget on renting clothes so that he could make an impression on the right people at parties. He recalled shelling out Rs 60,000 to borrow designer clothes for a few hours, and that scandalized his then-girlfriend, now wife, Sheetal Thakur, who pointed out that the cost exceeded their monthly expenses.

“I started attending parties; I started renting out clothes, which are so expensive. It costs so much money to wear those clothes just once. My wife, who was my girlfriend then, would be like, ‘Why? Rs 50,000-Rs 60,000 a day, per event? You are wearing a designer’s costume for 4-5 hours. That’s our expense for an entire month,” he told Rhea.

However, these attempts at aping the Bollywood elite and hobnobbing with the right crowds left him feeling hollow. “Going to these parties, wearing those ultra-expensive clothes, I was so conscious. Like the whole time, I would be like, ‘I hope this doesn’t get dirty because I have to return these clothes; they belong to a big designer,” he said.

On the work front, Massey will next be seen in the romantic drama ‘Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan’. The film marks the acting debut of Shanaya Kapoor, the daughter of actor Sanjay Kapoor and Maheep Kapoor. Santosh Singh has directed it, while Mansi Bagla penned the script. Produced by Zee Studios and Mini Films, Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan is set to hit theatres on July 11.

Based on a Ruskin Bond short story, ‘The Eyes Have It’, the film narrates a tender romance between a visually impaired musician and a theatre artiste during a train journey.
