The southwest monsoon, which moved quickly over central, western, and eastern India in the last two days, is now expected to reach Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab in the next two to three days, according to the India Meteorological Department ( IMD).

The IMD's extended forecast says that rainfall is likely between June 20 and June 25 across large parts of northwest India, including Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.

An IMD official confirmed that Delhi may get monsoon rains by June 22, which is earlier than the usual onset date of June 30.

Monsoon Came Early This Year

The monsoon reached Kerala on May 24, its earliest onset since 2009. It quickly moved ahead with help from strong low-pressure systems over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, covering parts of central Maharashtra and the northeast by May 29.

But after that, the monsoon paused for about 18 days, from May 29 to June 16, which led to heatwaves in many parts of northwest and central India.

The rain picked up again from June 16 to 18, thanks to new low-pressure systems over West Bengal and Gujarat.

What to Expect This Year

The IMD had earlier said that India may receive 106% of the average rainfall during the June–September monsoon season. Rainfall between 96% and 104% of the long-term average is considered “normal.”

Most parts of India are likely to get above-normal rainfall, except for Ladakh, some parts of northeast India, and areas in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha. Some isolated spots in Punjab, Haryana, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu may get below-normal rainfall.

Why Monsoon Matters

Monsoon is very important for India’s farming, which supports about 42% of the population and makes up 18.2% of the country’s GDP. It also helps refill water reservoirs used for drinking water and electricity generation.
