Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to have Asia's longest wildlife corridor: 14-km wildlife underpass for safe animal passage

In a recent update, Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is all set to have Asia’s longest wildlife corridor for safe animal passage. This only shows India’s commitment to combining infrastructure with ecological responsibility. The construction of a 14-kilometre wildlife corridor on the upcoming longest wildlife corridor expressway is part of a larger 210-km expressway project. This road will cut travel time between Delhi and Dehradun from over six hours to just about two and a half.

This engineering marvel is being praised for its eco-sensitive approach. As the road is being built along the fragile ecosystem of Rajaji National Park , which is home to elephants, leopards, deer, and many other animals. The corridor was incorporated to allow safe animal movement across the expressway.

Human and animal coexistence

The 14-km route will feature underpasses, tunnels, and elevated roadways, especially for animal crossings. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has recorded regular use of the corridor by elephants and other wildlife with their camera traps. These early results are being hailed as a major success by conservationists and forest officials.

Not only this, the infrastructure also features non-intrusive yellow lighting, sound barriers to reduce noise pollution, and vegetation planted around the structures. There will be bigger underpasses for elephants, and tunnels for smaller animals.

The infrastructure is welcomed by the forest department, with officials noting that wildlife activity near the corridor has already gone up. By opening this corridor, the government expects for the number of roadkill incidents to reduce and give animals access to historical migration routes to Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.

Model for Future Development

Newspoint

With its combination of modern infrastructure and ecological sensitivity, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is being seen as a model for future highway projects in India. Officials believe the success of this wildlife corridor could inspire similar designs in other eco-sensitive regions across the country. The wildlife underpass is a powerful and perfect example of how infrastructure projects can align with environmental goals. This proof that humans and animals can peacefully coexist in the world.

When inaugurated, the longest wildlife corridor project will set a benchmark for sustainable development in the country.
