Madhuri Dixit on facing criticisms as a beginner: "People used to say, 'Yeh heroine, isko thoda mota karo'"

Madhuri Dixit is one of the top evergreen actresses in India. Her acting skills, her classical dance moves, and illuminating grace has been winning fans since her debut in 1984. But, fame comes after a lot of perseverance and hard work. In Madhuri’s case, it was no different, The actress had her fair share of criticisms on the smallest of things.


In an interview with Bollywood Hungama in 2022, Madhuri Dixit had spoken about the challenges debutants face in the Hindi film industry . The actress revealed that she was heavily criticised for not weighing enough, and was to gain weight.

The ‘dhak-dhak’ of Bollywood was then asked what she thought she had to face, which the new actors don’t face. The actress had answered saying there were challenges then and there are challenges now, for every new actor, whether it was how to get good roles or even how to get a film. The actress had continued saying that challenges will always be there in the industry.

“During my time… they thought I was too skinny to begin with. Yeh heroine, isko thoda mota karo (make this heroine gain weight) they used to say. I don’t think that that’s an issue now,” Madhuri had said. In the same interview, Madhuri also shared what the present leading actors in Bollywood could learn from her if she ever wrote an autobiography.

“Keep experimenting. It doesn’t matter whether you succeed or you fail. Failures are learning points, but failures also show that sometimes you are way ahead of your time. But don’t worry about it. Just keep doing what your gut says and go for the most challenging roles,” had said Madhuri.

Madhuri was last seen as a judge in Dance Deewane, which is a dance reality show. 2024 is said to be big for Madhuri as she said during one of the interviews for her film Panchak, that she has been planned to do a web series this year.
