Rod Stewart reflects on painful divorce from Rachel Hunter: 'It tore me to shreds'
The legendary rocker Rod Stewart has opened up about the emotional roller coaster of his divorce from model Rachel Hunter , describing the split as one of the most devastating chapters of his life. In an interview, Stewart admitted that the age gap between them eventually led to the breaking of their marriage.
“Rachel left me because she was too young.”Stewart, in an interview with The Times, said, “Rachel left me because she was too young—my sister said I should never have married her in the first place—but it tore me to shreds.”
The couple met in 1990 at the Roxbury Club in Los Angeles when Rachel was just 21 and Stewart was 45. They married three months later and had two children, Renée and Liam, before separating in 1999. Their divorce was finalised in 2006.
“I took to lying on the sofa… I was distracted, almost to the point of madness.”In his autobiography, ‘Rod: The Autobiography,’ Stewart described the aftermath of the breakup in visceral detail, saying, “I felt cold all the time. I took to lying on the sofa in the day, with a blanket over me and holding a hot water bottle against my chest. I knew then why they call it heartbroken: you can feel it in your heart. I was distracted, almost to the point of madness.”
“I was a rock star. You don’t dump a rock star.”Speaking to People, Stewart recalled his disbelief at the split by saying, “I couldn’t believe it. I was a rock star. You don’t dump a rock star.” Despite the heartbreak , Stewart spoke of Hunter with admiration, saying, “She’s got everything—beauty, brains, strength. She’s still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever known.”
Moving forward with Penny Lancaster Just a day after his split from Hunter, Stewart met his future wife, Penny Lancaster, at the Dorchester Hotel. They married in 2007 and now share two sons. Stewart credits Lancaster with healing his heart as he says, “Penny is the love of my life… She’s got everything I could possibly want.”
