In Margao, Brazilian classics meet Goan staples

In the heart of Margao’s vibrant Rail Arcade Food Court, a quaint eatery is quietly capturing hearts with more than just flavourful offerings. DoSul, a snack bar, is a labour of love, a blend of cultures, and a story of two dreamers who traded cruise ships for culinary creativity.
The name 'DoSul' (which is the Portuguese term for 'from the south' — perfectly reflects the origins of its founders: Lawrence Gomes (who is from South Goa) and Luana (from South Brazil).
What began as a shared Instagram handle, @gomes_de_sul, soon evolved into the name of their dream project. It’s a tribute to their roots, a love story and the desire to build something from the heart.
“DoSul is not just a name; it’s our journey, our identity, and the coming together of two worlds,” explains Lawrence.
Before launching DoSul in May 2025, Lawrence and Luana were seasoned seafarers with careers on cruise ships. Despite the allure of travel, the stress of life at sea led them to rethink their future.
“We had always dreamed of owning a cafe,” they share. “But, it took a spontaneous leap of faith to turn that dream into reality.”

In just a few short weeks, they transformed an empty stall into a cosy and inviting snack bar. From the furniture to the branding, every element was handcrafted by the couple, adding a personal touch that you feel the moment you walk in.
Hospitality runs in their veins. Both hold degrees in the field and boast years of experience in hotels and cruise operations. Lawrence’s love for cooking began early, while Luana started baking muffins and cupcakes in high school.
“Foodhas always been a big part of our lives,” they say. “At DoSul, every dish is made with intention, and the secret ingredient is always love.”
The Rail Arcade location was a thoughtful choice. Positioned close to schools, offices, hospitals and right by the railway station, DoSul serves a dynamic mix of customers — from daily commuters to local families. The concept is simple: quick, hearty meals with warm service.
“Whether it’s a student grabbing a snack or a traveller in a hurry, we make sure they leave with a smile,” says Lawrence.

The menu is a reflection of their shared tastes and backgrounds. Brazilian classics meet Goanstaples, and everything is prepared fresh with custom seasoning. A standout is the Empada de Massa Podre, a Brazilian savoury pie that’s quickly becoming a house favourite.
“Our peri peri dishes are born out of our own cravings,” they explain. “And, the steak bread is a nostalgic nod to Goan comfort food.”
Today, the response from the Margao community has been heartening. Customers appreciate the transparency, home-style taste and customisation options. Inspired by their feedback, DoSul has already added fitness-friendly and rice-based dishes.
Starting out, challenges were plenty — from delayed equipment to last-minute electrical glitches. Yet, they laboured through.
“Our first day was just a half-day because of a wiring issue,” they recall. “But, we still served happy customers.” That resilience is now woven into DoSul’s identity.

Looking ahead, the couple envisions a larger space with more seating and an ever-evolving menu. “At DoSul, it’s not just about food,” they smile. “It’s about stories, memories, and making people feel at home.”
