Hanging basket flowers will stay healthy in summer with 10-second task once a week

Hanging baskets brimming with blooms appear stunning during summer, yet they have a tendency to wither and die rapidly unless gardeners give them careful attention. When plants are elevated in the air, they face complete exposure to sunlight, meaning they lack any shade whatsoever and cannot find relief from the heat.

Nevertheless, Carmen Johnston, a gardening enthusiast, has revealed there's a remarkably straightforward method to maintain your hanging basket flowers in good health - simply rotate them weekly. Carmen explained: "Give baskets a turn to ensure even growth-no one likes a 'good side only' basket."

Whilst it may appear basic, hanging baskets can create harsh conditions for plant growth, as those positioned near the wall receive minimal light whilst those on the exterior can be overwhelmed by excessive sunshine, reports the Express.

This imbalance can lead to certain plants becoming parched whilst others fail to flourish properly, so to remedy this issue, ensure you keep turning the basket regularly.

Rotating the basket at least once weekly guarantees all the plants within receive equal exposure, enabling them to develop simultaneously and increasing their likelihood of flowering.

It's also beneficial to be mindful of what you're placing in a hanging basket, as it's helpful to position shade-loving plants on one side whilst sun-loving varieties occupy the opposite side.

Carmen noted: "Shady plants will fry quickly if they get too much sun so be aware of your plant combinations."

Hanging baskets tend to last longer and offer better value for money when they feature a combination of perennial and annual plants to create balance.

When incorporating vibrant petunias, ensure you include a fern or ivy as the foundation of the hanging basket, as this creates visual interest throughout the year.

Carmen explained: "For containers I usually recommend 3 T's-you want something Tall, Thick & Trailing. There is a caveat for hanging baskets, though. Sometimes mixing three trailing plants can give an even bigger impact."

With thoughtful plant choices, weekly basket rotation and regular watering, your hanging basket will remain stunning with minimal fuss.
