Home Bargains item sparks debate as people either 'love it or hate it'

Home Bargains shoppers have been divided over an item on shop shelves that has been branded "cheap and nasty", while others say it is "moreish" and "surprisingly nice." A handful were still processing the news that one of the nation's favourite bargain shops even sold the item to begin with.

Most birthday celebrations require a cake, but even a supermarket version can end up costing more than £10, depending on what you opt for. But, if you're only feeding a small crowd, this Home Bargains offer might be ideal.

Posting on the official Snack Reviews Facebook group, lead member Daniel Chubb wrote: "Looks like I’m having a birthday today. And tomorrow. And probably Wednesday too. Victoria Sponge Cake £3.99 at Home Bargains."

In the photos, the shopper showed off a brightly decorated birthday cake from Comerfords Family Bakery with cream, chocolate, and sprinkles and layers of raspberry jam for just £3.99. The cake doesn't give a serving size on the packaging, but it appears to be big enough to make about eight slices—ideal for small parties and gatherings.

People were divided on Facebook after the post went online. Some were clueless that Home Bargains even sold cakes, others loved and a few were unconvinced. One said: "It's surprisingly nice, my toddler decided her daddy was going to have it for his birthday so I had to buy it!"

Another added: "Am I the only one who didn't know Home Bargains even sold cakes?" A third wrote: "It's really nice. I thought it would be c***, but I loved it and have bought it a few times since." Someone else put: "I've had this cake and it's really moreish!"

A fifth person claimed: "That looks foul. It’s so easy to make [one] fresh!" A Home Bargains shopper added: "Tasted like shaving foam!" And, one more said: "Cakes are something I don't mess with. The cheap ones are never good!"

The discount retailer might be known for its Star Buys, discount home goods, and sweet snacks, but some people are grabbing items from the everyday food section. Some Home Bargains stores have their own bakery section, as well as frozen and fresh food on offer.
