New Delhi: Leicester City and Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually parted ways after the Foxes’ relegation to the Championship. Van Nistelrooy left the club after both parties agreed upon contract termination with immediate effect. Odds of Dutchman staying at Leicester were quite low following a dismal 2024-25 campaign, where he won just four of his 24 Premier League matches in charge.

Two of the four wins came against also-relegated Ipswich Town and Southampton after relegation had already been confirmed.

In a disastrous campaign, Van Nistelrooy oversaw 19 defeats and managed just five wins from his 27 matches in charge in all competitions.

Leicester’s relegation was confirmed well before the campaign ended (five matches left), but the former interim Man United boss was at the helm till the end of the season and remained the Foxes’ boss for another month after the season concluded.

Leicester face a daunting task

Leicester are facing a daunting task of regrouping for their second season in the second division in three years. The Foxes are also in danger of getting a points penalty for the upcoming season for allegedly breaching the English Football League’s financial rules.

Van Nistelrooy wished the club well for the future.

“I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the club,” he told Leicester’s website.

Former Everton and Burnley manager Sean Dyche is one of the top contenders to replace the Dutchman at the King Power Stadium ahead of their return to England’s second tier.
