Jannik Sinner crushes Novak Djokovic to set up Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz

New Delhi: World No.1 Jannik Sinner defeated the seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in straight sets (6-3, 6-3, 6-4) to advance to his maiden Wimbledon men’s singles final on Friday, July 11. He will face arch-rival Carlos Alcaraz, who is chasing a hat-trick of Wimbledon singles titles, in the final on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the Spaniard beat Taylor Fritz in a closely fought first semi-final match.
Sinner performed brilliantly and didn’t let himself be distracted by Djokovic’s injury problems during the game. It was clear from the first set that Djokovic wasn’t in full form. Both players started with love holds, and the first break came in favour of the Italian, and he took control of the match.
Sinner held firmly to his serve, and the Serbian only managed two points on return. He took advantage of the opportunities and won the first set by 6-3. The World No.1 started the second set by winning 12 of the first 14 points of the set and took a 3-0 lead.
Djokovic struggled with his baseline movement and relied heavily on his serve to remain competitive in the set, but without much response on return. The Italian pushed the accelerator and won the second set by 6-3.
The Serbian called for medical assistance during the changeover, and things looked worse for the former World No.1. But he managed to compete in the third set and got an early break, taking a 3-0 lead. But his movements got very limited, and he struggled to hit first serves.
Sinner again dominated the set by winning the next 16 points out of the 20, taking five back-to-back games to go 5-3 up. Djokovic had to save two match points against the Italian on his serve to compete in the match, but Sinner ultimately won the set by 6-4.
‘It’s amazing i can’t believe it’: Jannik Sinner on reaching Wimbledon finalAfter the match, Sinner said that it is amazing and he couldn’t believe it, as it was the tournament he used to watch growing up and never imagined playing in the final. The Italian also praised his team and said that he know how much hard work they are putting in.
“I served very well and was moving much better today. We all saw, especially in the third set, he (Djokovic) was a bit injured. He’s been in a difficult situation but I tried to stay calm, play the best tennis I can in the important moments, and let’s see what’s coming now in the final” Sinner added.
