New Delhi: In a shocking case from Haryana’s Faridabad, a young woman was allegedly murdered by her in-laws and secretly buried outside their home, even as the family pretended she had gone missing. For nearly two months, no one suspected a thing. It was only when the woman’s father noticed a freshly filled pit outside the house that the truth began to emerge. Police have now arrested four members of the family, including the victim’s husband. The woman’s body has been recovered and a post-mortem has been conducted.

The victim, 25-year-old Tannu Rajput, was married to Arun Singh, 28, and lived in Palla’s Roshan Nagar. Her body was found in a pit 8 to 10 feet deep, right in front of the family’s three-storey house. She originally belonged to Khera village in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district, The Hindustan Times reported.

Missing report raised doubts

Tannu was reported missing on April 25. Her husband had filed a complaint at Palla police station, saying she was mentally unstable and had disappeared the previous day. But police later discovered this was just a cover-up to hide a murder. The case took a turn when Tannu’s family, contacted during the investigation, said they didn’t believe she had eloped. They insisted she would never leave without informing them, raising suspicions that she had been harmed.

On Friday, police questioned Arun Singh’s father, Bhoop Singh, 50. After hours of interrogation, he reportedly admitted that Tannu had been killed and buried right outside their house. A JCB machine was brought in and, after digging eight feet deep, her remains were found — identified by her clothes. An autopsy was carried out at Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, and the report is expected next week.

Murder hidden as construction work

Investigators say the murder was planned in detail. The in-laws told neighbours they were digging a soak pit to prevent waterlogging, but it was actually meant for burying the body. “The pit was originally dug in April for a sewer connection, as the area lacks formal water or drainage infrastructure. The family filled it with sand, and after committing the murder, buried her body there under cover of darkness. None of the neighbours had any idea about what had happened,” said Inspector Satya Parkash, SHO of Palla police station. The family used plastic sheets to cover the pit and even avoided hiring outside labour to keep their secret.
