Leeds Test, Day 2: Ben Stokes, Josh Tongue sizzle as England bowl out India for 471
New Delhi: England skipper Ben Stokes and right-arm pacer Josh Tongue sizzled with the new ball to bowl out India for 471 runs in the first innings of the first Test match at Leeds. After a superb start to the second day of opening match, Indian team lost the track after Shubman Gill’s departure losing as many as seven wickets in quick succession.
The Indian team, which was well positioned at 359 for 3 at the start of the day went to Lunch at 454/7 after scoring 95 runs in the first session and losing 4 wickets. After Gill, Karun Nair, Rishabh Pant and Shardul Thakur were quickly dispatched to the pavilion which was followed by a wrap of the opening session.
With the last three batters expected to last for some time in the second session of the day, their departure was also quick as in a span of just 4 overs, the rest of the line up was also cleaned up. Gill and Pant highlighted India’s innings with scores of 147 and 134 respectively while Nair and Jasprit Bumrah were out for a duck.
Prasidh Krishna scored just a single run while Mohammed Siraj remained unbeaten on 3 as rain stopped the play at the Headingly cricket ground. Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal also scored a hundred on the first day while seasoned KL Rahul contributed with 42 runs.
In a gap of just 41 runs from 430/3 to 471 all out, India lost as many as seven wickets. 430 is the highest score a team was three wickets down from which they were bowled out without getting to 500. This also became India’s highest first innings total in an away Test match since scoring 622/7 dec in the New Year’s Test in Sydney in 2019. The last time they made as many in the first innings in England was 664 at the Oval in 2007.

It was Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue who did the talking with the ball for the host side after claiming four wickets apiece. While Stokes registered figures of 4/66, Tongue was exceptional with figures of 4/86, cleaning up all-rounder Jadeja and the tail quickly. Earlier Pant shined by smashing his seventh Test century.
Meanwhile, heavy rain in Leeds delayed the start of England’s first innings after the visitors were bowled out.
