No Toll Tax for Two-Wheelers: Nitin Gadkari Calls Viral Reports “False”

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has officially dismissed reports claiming that two-wheelers will have to pay toll tax from July 15. In a post on social media platform X, Gadkari clarified:
Why the Confusion?“No such decision has been taken. Two-wheelers will continue to be completely exempt from toll tax.”
Some misleading reports had gone viral suggesting that toll would soon be collected from two-wheeled vehicles. Gadkari's statement puts those rumours to rest.
In reality, two-wheelers are exempt from toll on national highways because a nominal toll is already collected at the time of vehicle purchase. Only four-wheelers and above are charged toll when passing through plazas on national highways.
What Has Changed: New Annual Toll Pass ComingWhile the two-wheeler toll rumor was fake, Gadkari did recently announce
-
Launch date: August 15, 2025
-
Price: ₹3,000
-
Benefit: Up to 200 toll journeys per year
-
Valid on: National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and National Expressway (NE) toll plazas
-
Not valid on: State highway toll booths
This new annual pass aims to ease traffic congestion and long waiting times at toll plazas—especially for regular commuters living within 60 km of these points.
Bottom Line:
There is no toll tax being introduced for two-wheelers. If you're a rider, you're still free to cruise through the tolls. However, if you're a four-wheeler owner, the new annual pass might help you save money and time.
