Ignored by Team India, Ishan Kishan to Play for Foreign Team — Signs Up with Nottinghamshire in England
Ishan Kishan, once considered one of India's most promising wicketkeeper-batsmen, has taken a bold step after being sidelined from the national team. Having played his last international match in 2023, and being overlooked even during the recent India A tour to England, Kishan has now signed a short-term deal to play county cricket in England.
The 26-year-old cricketer has joined Nottinghamshire
Debut in County Cricket This June
Ishan will play his first match for Nottinghamshire against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge on June 22, followed by a second match against Somerset at Taunton on June 29
Kishan's Response
On his county debut, Ishan said,
“I’m really looking forward to this opportunity. Playing in England’s red-ball conditions will be a great challenge and I want to use this platform to improve my skills and evolve as a cricketer. Trent Bridge is a historic ground and I’m excited to step onto it in Nottinghamshire colours.”
A Push to Improve Red-Ball Game
Kishan’s move comes after he was left out of India's Test squad for the ongoing England series, where Dhruv Jurel was picked instead. The decision raised questions among fans, especially after Ishan was also benched during the India A tour. Looking to sharpen his red-ball game and stay relevant in the selectors’ radar, he’s opted to gain experience in the competitive environment of county cricket.
Solid First-Class Record
Ishan has already proven his mettle in domestic cricket. In 58 First-Class matches, he has scored 3,447 runs, including 8 centuries and 17 fifties. His career-best score is 273 for Jharkhand against Delhi in 2016 — a record for Jharkhand in Ranji Trophy at the time.
With this move, Ishan Kishan is not only keeping himself match-fit but also sending a clear message — he’s not out of the game yet and is willing to go the extra mile to make a comeback.
