“Hindi Is Not the Enemy of Any Language”: Amit Shah Urges Indians to Embrace Their Mother Tongue, Leave 'Mentality of Slavery' Behind

Amid an escalating language row between the Centre and Tamil Nadu, Union Home Minister Amit Shah made a strong appeal for linguistic pride, stating that Hindi is a friend, not a rival, to other Indian languages. He emphasized that language is not just a tool of communication, but the soul of a nation, urging citizens to speak, think, and feel in their own language
Speaking at a recent event, Shah said:
“Until we take pride in our language and express ourselves in it, we cannot be free from the mentality of slavery.”
He clarified that this was not a call for opposing foreign languages, but a push to glorify and empower Indian languages, especially Hindi, which he called a “bridge language” among diverse tongues.

He also highlighted that translation tools and software are being developed to ensure smooth administrative functioning in multiple Indian languages, making government processes more inclusive.

“For decades, language was used to divide India. But we want to ensure that language becomes a uniting force. The Department of Official Language will lead this mission.”
He outlined the future role of Hindi and regional languages in competitive exams and governance, citing that JEE, NEET, and CUET are now conducted in 13 languages, and 95% of candidates for CAPF constable exams now opt for their mother tongue.
