SGPC seeks action against Union minister Sukanta Majumdar accused of disrespecting Sikh turban in Kolkata

PTC Web Desk: Union minister Sukanta Majumdar has come under sharp criticism following allegations that a slipper was thrown at a Sikh man's turban during a public event in Kolkata. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, particularly among the Sikh community, with calls for immediate government action. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami strongly condemned the act, calling it a "deep insult to the Sikh faith and identity."

In a firm statement, Advocate Dhami said, "The turban is not merely an article of clothing but a sacred symbol representing Sikh dignity, honour, and spiritual commitment."

“The turban is an integral part of Sikhism and an emblem of our identity. Any act that dishonours it deeply hurts the sentiments of the entire Sikh community,” said SGPC president Advocate Dhami.

He urged the Union ministers to uphold the dignity of all religions and lead by example in respecting India’s diverse cultural and spiritual heritage. Advocate Dhami also highlighted the unparalleled contributions of Sikhs in India’s struggle for independence, national integrity, and humanitarian efforts — from relief during natural disasters to feeding millions through community kitchens (langars).

“It is unfortunate and disgraceful when someone holding a constitutional position engages in such a deplorable act,” he added. The SGPC president has called upon the Central Government to initiate strict disciplinary action against Majumdar to uphold communal harmony and preserve public trust.

Advocate Dhami further warned that such incidents, if unchecked, not only inflict emotional damage on the Sikh population but also weaken the social fabric of harmony and mutual respect in the country.
