Restore Indus Water Treaty: Pakistan urges India to honour agreement after Court of Arbitration ruling

PTC News Desk: Pakistan on Monday urged India to resume the normal functioning of Indus Water Treaty which New Delhi has held in abeyance since May, citing he recent decision by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague showed that the agreement was still "valid and operational".

The ruling announced on June 27, upheld the court's competence in the dispute and reiterated its responsibility to conduct proceedings in a 'timely, efficient and fair manner'. 

The Pakistan's foreign office has welcomed the decision describing it as vindication of country's position. "The supplemental award confirms that Indus Water Treaty remains valid and operational," it said adding that India has 'no right to suspend or alter its obligations unilaterally.

Furthermore, Islamabad has urged New Delhi to immediately restore the treaty framework and fulfil its obligations 'wholly' and 'faithfully'. Meanwhile New Delhi has questioned the the jurisdiction of the Court of Arbitration and argued that the matter should be resolved via neutral expert.

India has also refused to participate in the current arbitration process, maintaining that it was not binding.
