The 5 most dangerous countries in Europe - 1 is right next to the UK
There are a few countries in the world that people may choose not to travel to. Some of the most important factors to consider include crime levels, political stability, the risk of terrorism, and whether a country is currently involved in conflict.
And now, the World Population Review has named the five most dangerous countries in Europe, and one of them is right on Britain's doorstep. The list is based on the Global Peace Index (GPI), which uses 23 factors to assess how peaceful or dangerous a country is. These include violent crime rates, relations with neighbouring countries, terrorism risks, internal conflicts, and overall political stability.
A higher GPI score means a country is considered less safe. While most European countries rank as relatively peaceful, a handful are currently listed as much more dangerous.
Topping the list is Ukraine, where a full-scale war is still ongoing following Russia's invasion in 2022.
According to the UK Government, the security situation remains highly volatile, with frequent missile and drone attacks causing civilian casualties and damage across the country.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to large parts of Ukraine, including the Crimea region and areas within 50km (31 miles) of the Belarus border.
Even in some western regions where travel is not completely banned, Brits are urged to be ready to shelter quickly if air alerts are announced.
Ukraine's airspace also remains closed, and widespread blackouts are possible.
The second most dangerous country is Russia, followed by Belarus and Cyprus.
But the fifth spot on the list is taken by France, which shares a maritime border with the UK via the Channel Tunnel.
France is one of the most visited countries in the world and is generally safe for tourists.
However, the UK Government warns there is a high threat of terrorism.
Attacks could happen in crowded public places such as shopping centres, train stations, and venues popular with tourists.
In 2023, two deadly knife attacks occurred in Paris and Arras, and French authorities say they continue to disrupt other planned attacks.
The UK Government advises visitors to remain alert and follow local advice.
Petty crime such as pickpocketing and scams is also common in busy areas, particularly in cities like Paris.
Women travelling alone have also reported low-level sexual harassment.
Despite this, millions of people visit France safely every year. Most incidents are minor, and tourists are unlikely to be affected if they take basic precautions.
These rankings are based on the most recent Global Peace Index data compiled by the World Population Review.
