Twitter down: X stops working for thousands of users

Thousands could not access X, formerly Twitter, this afternoon, according to Downdetector. Social media users reported a largescale outage on Elon Musk's platform on Wednesday, with over 5,000 reports lodged in the last hour.
The problem was first flagged at around 2:20pm, with 5,559 people from the UK taking to Downdetector, which allows users to highlight issues with a range of websites, to complain. People opening X on their mobile phones and the web were met with a "something went wrong" message. More than 15,000 reports were also lodged by US-based users.

X users also took to alternative platform Threads to share news of the outage, with one person writing: "Twitter down again" and another adding: "I guess now Twitter/X went down ... hello y'all".
The social media platform, which was bought by the world's richest man in 2022, previously left users unable to send messages or create posts just a few months ago in March 2025.
Over 10,000 people reported problems with X on March 10, with the issue eventually resolved after around 20 minutes.
Musk bought Twitter, which he renamed as X, three years ago for $44billion (£34billion), with the takeover sending thousands of users to rival platforms including Bluesky and Threads.
X has not issued a formal statement on the cause of today's outage.
As of 3:40pm, the website appears to be working as normal.
