UK holidaymakers planning to travel to Spain have been issued a sharp warning. Spanish authorities say that Brits who fail to provide proof of adequate health insurance coverage could be fined thousands. The new regulation was announced by Spain's Ministry of the Interior and Ministry of Health, and is part of ongoing efforts to make travel regulations stricter following Brexit.

Spain remains the most popular holiday destination for Brits. In 2023, 17.8 million visits to Spain were made by UK residents. Now, those seeking to catch some of the Spanish sun, will have to ensure their documentation is ready beforehand or risk paying up to €6,900 (£5,953.70).

The new requirements mean that Brits must have private travel insurance that covers all medical expenses whilst they are away. The change of rules has left many tourists confused by the policy, as they've relied on the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which was no longer valid after the UK left the EU.

To ensure that UK holidaymakers can afford any medical emergiences needed during their visit to Spain, proof of health insurance must be provided before entering the country.

The insurance must meet specific criteria outlined by the Spanish Ministry of Health, ensuring adequate coverage for emergencies, hospital stays and other essentuial medical services, reports Travel and Tour World.

Spain's Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, highlighted that the tight measure is to ensure that all visitors have the necessary financial resources to cover healthcare costs, and prevent an additional strain on the country's public healthcare system.

She said: "The health of our visitors is a priority. We are committed to ensuring that all travellers, including British nationals, have the necessary coverage to protect themselves and the local healthcare system."

Those who fail to comply with the health insurance requirements risk being denied entry to the country. In more serious cases, travellers who are already in Spain and are unable to show valid health insurance may be fined thousands.

Spanish authorities have assured that passengers will have the opportunity to present their insurance documents before boarding their flights.

Travellers are encouraged to secure their travel insurance prior to their trip to prevent any issues or delays. Having the required documents ready for presentation upon arrival will help ensure a smooth process.
