Indian T20 League: Raina becomes first player to score 5000 runs

Suresh Raina has become the first player to reach the 5000-run mark in the Indian T20 League. Before the first match of the league's 2019 edition, Raina needed 15 runs to achieve the mark and he did that during Chennai's run chase against Bangalore at the Chepauk.

Before the match, Raina and Bangalore captain Virat Kohli were in the race for the coveted spot.

The India captain was 52 runs adrift of the mark but fell for 6 as his team was bowled out for 70.

When Chennai batted, Raina came into bat after Shane Watson's dismissal for a duck. Raina took his time at the beginning as scoring runs was difficult on the pitch.

In the 9th over of Chennai's innings, the moment of truth arrived. The fifth ball from Umesh Yadav was tickled to fine leg and Raina became the first man to reach 5000 runs in the league.

Raina was eventually dismissed for 19 by Moeen Ali but is now the leading run scorer in the tournament with 5,004 runs in 177 games.

It has taken the UP batsman 173 innings to achieve the feat and his Indian T20 League career includes one hundred and 35 fifties.
