BJP planning to disturb Durga Puja's atmosphere by raking up NRC issue: TMC on Amit Shah, Nadda's WB visit

Kolkata: Ahead of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP working president JP Nadda's visit to West Bengal, TMC leader Madan Mitra claimed that the Centre wants to destroy the atmosphere of Durga Puja festival in the state by raising the issue of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Mitra said that according to him, BJP leaders Amit Shah and Nadda will try to destroy the ambience of Durga pooja by raking up the issue of NRC and to demolish the opposition.

He further said that he will not be surprised even if Modi comes to Bengal adding that it implementing NRC in Bengal is next to impossible.

Speaking on the issue of NRC, Mitra said, “We cannot stop the NRC-related death toll as only BJP party is responsible for it.”

The TMC leader further claimed that he got to know that around 350 affidavits have been filed in Alipur court related to the NRC.

"Why are they (BJP) compelling the people to get panicked? Mamata Banerjee has categorically mentioned that no NRC will be accepted in Bengal and everyone here is ready to fight back,” ANI quoted the TMC leader as saying.

Earlier, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee accused local BJP and CPI-M leaders of creating panic by carrying out a “misinformation campaign” on the National Register of Citizens (NRC). She further said that there has been no discussion about an NRC in the state, and clarified that no such exercise will be implemented in the state.

Mamata had also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah during her visit to New Delhi over NRC.

Her statement came after one person committed suicide in Jalpaiguri district, while another died after falling sick in a queue for amending his ration card in South Dinajpur district. Both the families have claimed that they were panic-stricken over any possible NRC exercise.

After Mamata’s statement on NRC, Vishva Hindu Parishad termed the situation in West Bengal “highly dangerous” for the Hindu society and asked the CM to desist from making statements opposing the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The right-wing organization further alleged that Banerjee's open public statement asking people to file FIR in police stations about losing their personal documents was just a ploy "to escape NRC net".

BJP president Shah and Nadda will be in West Bengal to address a public gathering on October 1 and September 27 respectively. Nadda is expected to deliver a speech on Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and NRC in Salt Lake Stadium.
