SALEM: Chief minister M K Stalin will not permit privatisation of public sector enterprises in Tamil Nadu, including Salem Steel Plant, said MP and chairman of the parliamentary standing committee Tiruchi Siva on Tuesday.

Siva was speaking to reporters after conducting an inspection of Salem Steel Plant.

“Salem Steel Plant is a point of pride for Tamil Nadu. It was a dream project for former chief minister C N Annadurai, and it was later brought to fruition by 'Kalaignar' Karunanidhi, " he said.

He said Karunanidhi had transformed it from an iron plant into a smelter plant. The facility is currently engaged in world-class stainless steel production.

Siva expressed concern that the plant has been driven to a state where it struggles to achieve profitability due to various challenges.

Siva said Stalin had reached out to Union heavy industries and steel minister HD Kumaraswamy for the renovation and expansion of the plant. “Measures are being implemented to revive the plant and expand its operations to generate substantial profits,” he added.

Siva was accompanied by state tourism minister R Rajendran.
