Ghatal: As many as 209 out of 275 pregnant women — displaced by the recent floods in the Midnapore Sadar area and admitted at Ghatal Super Speciality Hospital and Keshpur Rural Hospital — have given birth within eight days. They were admitted to the hospitals from July 9 onwards.

After heavy rain left Ghatal, Chandrakona, Daspur, and Keshpur blocks in the Midnapore Sadar area flooded, the administration arranged for the rescue and hospitalisation of high-risk pregnant women in six blocks and municipal areas.

Those with imminent delivery dates were admitted to the Mother Hub at Ghatal hospital. All the mothers and the newborns are healthy, according to CMOH Saumyasankar Sarangi.

He said, "Seven babies were born on Wednesday. In eight days, 209 deliveries were conducted, and 66 women are still admitted. Additionally, 31 people are being treated for snake bites. Twenty-three medical teams are monitoring the situation, and ASHA workers are visiting homes by boat to gather information."

District magistrate Khursheed Ali Qadri and superintendent of police Dhritiman Sarkar said arrangements were made to swiftly admit pregnant women, elderly people and ailing patients to the hospital during the flood situation.

On Wednesday, PHE department secretary Surendra Gupta visited the Mother Hub of Ghatal Super Speciality Hospital along with other officials.
