Delhi CM Rekha Gupta vows 'clean' Kanwar Yatra: Funds to be given via direct benefit transfer; accuses previous AAP govt of graft
NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta on Monday announced that the state government will now directly transfer funds to Kanwar committees through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
Addressing a press conference, CM Gupta launched a scathing attack on the previous AAP government, alleging deep-rooted corruption in the management of Kanwar Yatra arrangements.
“In the name of providing services to all the Kanwar Yatris, the previous government turned this into a hub of corruption,” she said.
Gupta claimed that tenders were monopolised by just two-three individuals for the entire city.
“Committees of Kanwar Yatris told us that tents weren’t even set up until the last day. How is this acceptable?” she said.
Highlighting the failure to provide timely and adequate facilities for the Kanwariyas — the devotees of Lord Shiva who undertake the annual pilgrimage — Gupta said her administration was committed to restoring faith and fairness in the process.
“We will not allow a repeat of such mismanagement. From this year, funds will be sent directly to registered Kanwar committees,” she declared.
