Expect light evening or night showers for two days in Chennai: Met

CHENNAI: At the fag-end of a largely beneficial southwest monsoon, the suburbs recorded good spells of rain over the last two days, though the city’s core areas mostly remained dry. However, going by the forecast of the weatherman and experts, the city stands a chance, since light evening or night showers are expected for the next two days.

With only two weeks left for the southwest monsoon to begin its withdrawal , the city has so far received 15% excess rain.

According to a forecast by regional meteorological centre, Chennai, “Sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light rain is likely to occur in some areas during evening or night.” An IMD official said Chennai may end the season receiving normal rainfall, while many other states, except those like Tamil Nadu, have recorded a surplus.

While the city’s core areas recorded only traces on Thursday and Friday, experts said if the favourable condition persists and an upper air circulation forms over northern TN, it may change wind direction which could bring rain to the city.

Weather blogger Pradeep John said there may be a fall in temperature in the coming days. “The upper air circulation may not bring rain during the day. Evening and night rain may continue,” he said. While the northeast monsoon , which brings much of the city’s annual rainfall, is a month away, Skymet weather had earlier forecast that southwest monsoon may start withdrawing by September 20. A complete withdrawal may take at least three or four weeks, resulting in the onset of the northeast monsoon. The westerly winds may weaken and the easterlies may set in early bringing rain to the coastal regions.

“There’s not much rain in regions in the west like Kerala. The withdrawal of the monsoon, however, as such has no connection with the rain we see now in the city,” John said.
