Gujarat: Organ donations by two families save 6 lives at IKDRC

AHMEDABAD: Two cadaver donations in three days at Institute of Kidney Diseases & Research Centre (IKDRC) in Civil Hospital campuses gave new life to six persons.

According to IKDRC officials, Samir Mistry, 9, a resident of Bilimora , had fallen down some stairs on October 21 and was admitted to a hospital.

The Class IV student was declared brain-dead by doctors on October 29, after which his famliy donated his eyes, kidneys and liver.

“The kidneys gave a 17-year-old patient from Thane and 12-year-old patient from Surat relief from regular dialysis. Both surgeries took place on October 30, giving the families New Year’s gift. His liver was transplanted to a 22-year-old patient from Surat,” said an IKDRC official.

In the second instance, the organs of Mukesh Patel, a resident of Manjalpur in Vadodara, were transported 129km to Ahmedabad in 85 minutes after Vadodara traffic police created a green corridor. Officials said Patel had met with a road accident after which he was admitted to a private hospital. He succumbed to injuries on Friday, after which the family decided to donate his organs.

City-based surgeons transplanted Patel’s kidneys to a 38-year-old patient from Ahmedabad and 49-year-old resident of Vadodara, while his liver was transplanted in a 49-year-old from Sabarkantha. “With the creation of a patient registry at the state level, allocating organs has become more transparent. Hopefully, better coordination will make more inter-city transplants possible. Awareness plays a major role in quick decisions on donation,” said a senior IKDRC official.
