NEW DELHI: Karnataka is bracing for a week of intense monsoon activity, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting widespread rainfall across the state over the next seven days.

The forecast includes "heavy to very heavy rain" in several districts and "extremely heavy rainfall" at isolated locations, driven by a monsoon trough and an offshore weather system along the Maharashtra-Karnataka coast.

According to the IMD’s daily bulletin, coastal districts including Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi are likely to be hit hardest on Thursday, with gusty winds of 30-40 kmph accompanying heavy downpours.

The rainfall is expected to persist for at least the next two days before easing off slightly.

Heavy rain and high winds across north and south interior districts
In north interior Karnataka, Belagavi is forecast to receive "heavy to very heavy rain" with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph on July 3 and 4. Nearby Dharwad may also see significant rainfall, while moderate showers and winds are expected in Bidar, Bagalkot, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Raichur, Vijayapura, and Yadgir.

Meanwhile, south interior Karnataka districts like Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Shivamogga, and Kodagu are on alert for "heavy to very heavy rainfall" on July 3 and 4, with the possibility of extremely heavy rain in isolated spots on July 3.

Other districts—including Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mysuru, Mandya, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, and Davangere—are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall with strong winds during the forecast period.

Bengaluru to see cloudy skies, consistent rain
The capital and surrounding areas are expected to witness generally cloudy skies, with light to moderate rain over the next 48 hours. Winds could reach up to 50 kmph, with daytime temperatures hovering around 27°C and dropping to 20°C at night.

N Puviarasan, head of the Meteorological Centre in Bengaluru, said the weather office is “closely monitoring the situation” and issuing regular updates. He urged residents, particularly those in flood and landslide-prone areas, to stay alert and follow local advisories.

The IMD expects rainfall to reduce gradually across the state from July 7, but light to moderate showers with gusty winds could continue in several areas until at least July 9.
