Kozhikode Musicians' Welfare Cooperative Society formed

Kozhikode: A group of musicians in the district have formed Kozhikode Musicians’ Social Welfare Cooperative Society (KMSWCS) for the welfare of musicians. The intention behind the formation of the welfare society is to bring together all singers, instrumentalists, music directors, music teachers and others working in the field of music.

The formal inauguration of KMSWCS will held at Kozhikode town hall on Sunday. Minister for transport A K Saseendran will inaugurate the Welfare Society. The members of KMSWCS will also perform a musical night as part of the formal launch of the programme.

“It was in July that we completed the registration process,” said Noushad Areekode, general convener of the reception committee of the Society. “We have formed the group after the 25th anniversary of Musicians’ Welfare Association (MWA),” he added.

According to the office bearers of the Society, the aim is to bring all persons working in the field of music under a single roof. Those who are members in other groups can also join the Welfare Society that will introduce a series of welfare projects for its members.

“We also aim to expand the operation of the society to all districts in the state,” said the convenor. “The welfare projects by the Society will aim at helping the members to improve their financial stability by introducing short term and midterm loans and chits. The plan is to improve investment habits of musicians,” he said.

KMSWCS was modelled on the Music Cooperatives in England. According to the office bearers, the only such society in the field of music is the one for the musical instrument manufacturers in Thanjavoor.

Mayor Thottathil Raveendran will preside over the inaugural session of the Society. MLAs M K Muneer and A Pradeep Kumar will also be present.
