NEW DELHI: Seven members of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) have been detained for allegedly assaulting a food stall owner for not speaking Marathi, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on Tuesday in the Bhayander area of Thane district .

A video of the assault, which has since gone viral on social media, shows some of the attackers wearing scarves with the MNS symbol.

According to police, the altercation began when one of the men, while buying food, asked the stall owner to speak in Marathi.

When the vendor questioned him, the man began shouting, and others in the group allegedly slapped the shopkeeper.

The Kashimira police have registered a case against seven MNS members under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for threatening and assault.

The accused were brought to the police station and later allowed to leave after being served notices, said sub-inspector Kiran Kadam of Kashimira police station.

Police say they are in the process of initiating “chapter proceedings”—a form of preventive legal action—against the accused.

The zonal deputy commissioner of police’s office will require them to sign bonds committing to good behaviour, officials said.
