Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A 35-year-old man allegedly strangled his wife (30) at their rented house in Chitegaon village, Paithan taluka, following a domestic dispute on Sunday. Police said the accused attempted to end his life too by consuming poison and was currently hospitalised under police surveillance.

Bidkin police identified the deceased as Sheetal Bandu Jadhav of Dongaon. Her husband, Bandu Sukhdev Jadhav, is undergoing treatment at the govt hospital.

The crime came to light on Sunday morning when the woman's brother visited the house and found the couple unconscious. Assistant inspector Nilesh Shelke of Bidkin police said the victim's brother, Krishna Prakash Rathod, stated in his complaint that the couple got married 12 years ago and parents to a boy and a girl. "The family recently shifted to the Sainagar area of Chitegaon, where Sheetal was employed in a private firm, while Bandu worked as a mason," the officer said.

The officer said the two had frequent fights over petty domestic matters. "On Saturday, they had another heated argument. When Sheetal's brother failed to reach them over the phone the next morning, he rushed to their house around 9am. Finding the door locked from inside, he broke it open and found Sheetal unresponsive with cloth tied around her neck, hands and feet. Bandu too was found unconscious. The two were rushed to the district hospital, where Sheetal was declared dead, while Bandu was admitted for treatment," Shelke said.

He said, "As of Monday, the suspect is recovering. A police guard has been deployed at the hospital. As soon as he gets discharged, he will be arrested on murder charges."

Shelke said the couple was alone at the time of the incident as their children were staying at their maternal grandmother's house. A case under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against Bandu.
