No stubble burning cases reported for fifth consecutive day

Bathinda: Two more FIRs were filed against farmers on Saturday, even as no crop residue burning cases were recorded on the fifth consecutive day in Punjab , and the count remained at 95.

The FIRs have been filed under section 223 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the BNS for burning events recorded in previous days, raising the count to 56. Earlier, one FIR was registered on Friday, taking the count to 54. An environmental compensation of Rs 2.50 lakh has been imposed so far in the ongoing paddy harvesting season, of which Rs 1.90 lakh has been recovered. Besides this, 35 red entries have been marked in land records.

Against 95 farm fire cases till Oct 4 in the ongoing season, 188 cases were reported till the same day in 2024, while 656 were reported till Oct 4 in 2023.

Out of the 95 stubble burning cases till Oct 3, 55 were reported from Amritsar district, 11 from Tarn Taran, 10 from Patiala, four from Malerkotla, three each from Barnala and Kapurthala, two each from Sangrur and Hoshiarpur, and one each in Bathinda, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Jalandhar, and SAS Nagar. In all, 13 of the 23 districts of the state have now reported one or more farm fire cases in the ongoing season.

The ‘Consortium for Research on Agroecosystem Monitoring and Modeling from Space' (CREAMS) recorded 173 stubble burning cases from five states till Oct 4, with 95 from Punjab (54.9%), 56 from Uttar Pradesh, 12 from Madhya Pradesh, 7 from Haryana, and 3 from Rajasthan.
