Sigachi industries blast: Death toll rises to 44 amid ongoing rescue and DNA identification; 2 more victims succumb to injuries
HYDERABAD: The death toll in the explosion at Sigachi Industries chemical plant reached 44 on Tuesday as two more victims, who were undergoing treatment at private hospitals near Hyderabad, succumbed to burn injuries.
One of the deceased was Akhileshwar (30) from West Bengal, who had over 70% burn injuries and was on ventilator support when his vitals stopped working. The other deceased is Arif (24) from Bihar, who suffered a cardiac arrest while being treated. He already suffered from over 70% burn injuries from the June 30 explosion that ripped through the dryer unit of the firm in Sangareddy.
Arrangements were made by the district authorities to send both bodies to their native places after conducting the autopsy.
Of the 44 deceased persons now, a total of six victims died due to injuries at various private hospitals, while another 38 died during the tragedy. Another 17 injured are undergoing treatment at various private hospitals, of which two are still critical.
Eight people are still missing after the explosion, and their families and relatives are camping at the rehabilitation centre set up by the authorities near the blast site. They are S Ravi and S Justin (both from Telangana), Shivaji Kumar, Vijay Kumar Nishad, and Akilesh Kuka Nishad (all three from Bihar), Irfan Ansari (Jharkhand), Rahul Kumar Sharma (Uttar Pradesh), and G Venkatesh (Andhra Pradesh).
Teams of SDRF, NDRF, and HYDRAA are still going through the wreckage after the debris clearance and sending mutilated body parts retrieved from it for DNA analysis. Meanwhile, an expert team from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is scheduled to visit the blast site on Tuesday to ascertain the cause of the blast.
An inspection report prepared by an expert from the Telangana dept of factories just six months before the blast revealed that the company “lacked basic fire safety mechanism.” Moreover, “severe safety violations” and multiple other lapses were also observed.
