TMBU cracks down on unauthorized hostel occupants
Bhagalpur: Tilkamanjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) authorities have launched a crackdown on unauthorised occupants in its 12 university hostels. These hostels continue to be occupied by former students who, despite completing their courses, have not vacated their rooms, thereby denying accommodation to new students.
According to university sources, some hostellers are allegedly allowing outsiders—who are not even enrolled at the TMBU—to stay in their rooms. In response, the university has taken a series of strict measures, including filing FIRs against violators, sealing hostel rooms , issuing warnings of degree cancellation and revocation of university registration for those who defy hostel rules.
TMBU public relations officer, Deepak Kumar Dinkar, told this newspaper on Sunday that legal action is being initiated following a recent meeting of the TMBU syndicate. The meeting, chaired by acting vice chancellor Bimalendu Shekhar, was convened following a violent clash between two student groups on Sept 24 and 25 which resulted in significant damage to the university property.
During the syndicate meeting, the facts surfaced that clashes were fuelled and supported by the unauthorised students and outsiders occupying the hostels’ rooms, said Dinkar. He further added that the measures to stop such incidents in futures were finalised in the TMBU syndicate meeting held on Sept 26.
Dean student welfare (DSW) of TMBU Archana Kumari Sah said that notices to the hostel superintendents and wardens of boys’ and girls’ hostels, seeking detail information about unauthorised occupants, have been sought. Directive has also been issued to the officials to ensure that unauthorised occupants are evicted at the earliest.
Apprehending law-and-order problems in getting the hostel rooms vacated, the DSW has informed the Bhagalpur DM Nawal Kishor Choudhary, SSP Hriday Kant, and SDO (Sadar) Vikash Kumar, besides university police station SHO, seeking deployment of police forces and magistrates on the campus.
TMBU registrar Ramashish Purvey said that their steps are aimed at flushing out unauthorised occupants in hostels’ rooms and allot the same to newly enrolled students facing accommodation problems.
