UP: 'Drunk' inspector mows down elderly man, arrested

MEERUT: An inspector , allegedly in an inebriated state, mowed down an elderly man while returning from Shamli via Meerut-Karnal highway in UP on Friday.


Soon after the accident, Arvind Kumar, the inspector posted with crime branch in Meerut, tried to flee from the spot but was caught by the onlookers.

Kumar was later arrested for mowing down 62-year-old Mahkar Singh who was on a bike with his nephew. Singh’s nephew also sustained injuries. Both are residents of Meerut zone.

According to onlookers, inspector Kumar was in an inebriated state and an alcohol bottle was reportedly recovered from his car. A video of locals confronting the inspector after the incident has gone viral on social media.

Meanwhile, police have lodged an FIR under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against the accused cop at Sardhana police station. In the viral video , inspector Kumar who was not even able to hold himself could be seen surrounded by onlookers who began searching his car.

However, the medical report did not corroborate the allegations of liquor consumed by the accused inspector. Speaking to TOI on Friday, SP rural Avinash Kumar Pandey said, “The medical report did not corroborate the allegations of alcohol being consumed by the accused inspector. But, further investigation is being conducted.”
