Woman mistakes deceased as bro who was later found alive
Kanpur: An unusual case of identity confusion unfolded in the Ghatampur area of the district when a woman arrived to identify what she believed was her 22-year-old brother's body for a post-mortem examination but was astounded when her brother appeared at the police station, very much alive. He declared to the officials, "I'm alive, but a photo of my supposed death is viral on social media!" This unexpected development startled the police, who suspended the post-mortem examination.
ACP Ghatampur Krishna Kant Yadav clarified that they had discovered an unidentified body near the main crossing in Ghatampur. The family initially identified the body on Thursday based on various characteristics, including a tattoo, but the actual person appeared alive on Friday. The post-mortem examination was cancelled, and investigations to identify the deceased continue.
According to reports, the police found an unclaimed body beneath an overbridge in Kanpur's Ghatampur area on Thursday. They sent a photograph on social media for identification purposes. Suman, a resident of Devli village in Ghatampur, spotted the image and claimed it was her brother Ajay. She visited the location weeping, stating, "This is my younger brother's body; I raised him in my arms." When the police requested her to confirm, Suman responded, "How could I not recognise him?" The prevailing assumption was that Ajay had succumbed to heat while sitting under the bridge.
On Friday, as Suman arrived at the post-mortem house with her relatives, her brother's appearance at Ghatampur police station surprised station officer Dhananjay Pandey and he contacted the staff at the post-mortem house and halted the procedure.
Upon learning about her brother's presence, Suman's family rushed to the police station. Seeing him alive, she embraced him tearfully, saying, "I was praying all the way that the information given by the police was true." She explained her misidentification, noting similarities in facial features, physique, and clothing. The unidentified body remains in the morgue while the police have circulated its photograph to neighbouring districts for identification.
