T'puram: The ambitious city-wide LED streetlight installation project is nearing the final stretch, with nearly 80% of the work completed. While the Neyyattinkara division under KSEB finished the installation, significant portions of the Thiruvananthapuram and Kazhakkoottam divisions are still pending.

Among these, the Thiruvananthapuram division witnessed the most substantial delays, with the installation process coming to a halt for several months due to logistical and coordination issues.

"The delay in the Thiruvananthapuram division was unfortunate, but the work is back on track. We are coordinating with KSEB and other agencies to ensure it is completed by Aug," said Medayil Vikraman, works standing committee chairman of corporation.

The city-wide project, launched to replace conventional streetlights with energy-efficient LED lights, aims to significantly reduce electricity consumption and maintenance costs while improving public safety and nighttime visibility. Under the initiative, thousands of LED units are being installed across various wards under the city corporation.

The Kazhakootam division, which includes several high-density urban pockets and major roads, has also seen slower progress than anticipated, though not as severe as in the Thiruvananthapuram division. Corporation officials attribute the delays to issues with contractor mobilization and disruptions caused by overlapping civic infrastructure projects. The corporation is planning to install 1,15,000 streetlights in 100 wards. TNN
