71 trees fell in over two hours in Thane amid heavy rains

THANE: In the wake of a relentless downpour lasting three hours on Monday evening, Thane witnessed the fall of 71 trees across the city.

The downpour and gutsy winds led to the disruption, prompting urgent responses from the local authorities.

Head of the regional disaster management cell of the Thane municipal corporation, Yasin Tadvi informed that their control room was inundated with distress calls as the torrential rain wreaked havoc on the city's landscape that started with a dust storm at around 4 pm and last till 6.30 pm.
A total of 19.28 mm rainfall was recorded.

The official added that a person sustained injury on his hands when a tin of a building fell on his hand in Rabodi area. In another incident, tin sheds of a chawl flied over and hit another chawl in parsiwadi area Kopri and damaged 12 chawl tenements, injuring one person.

TDRF, firefighters, alongside other staff of TMC including assistant municipal commissioners, mobilized to address the incidents and mitigate the impact on residents and infrastructure, said Tadvi.

The assessment of the damage is yet to be made, the official said, adding that no casualty was reported till last reports came in.

The aftermath of the rainfall left several streets blocked and posed significant challenges to transportation and public safety.

Efforts to clear the fallen trees and restore normalcy to affected areas are underway, with authorities urging residents to remain vigilant and exercise caution in the aftermath of the weather event.
