Reuters handle on Twitter withheld in India; Government says no order given; official says 'we are continuously ...'
International news agency Reuters ’s Twitter (now X) handle has been withheld in India, reports PTI. The action, the report says, comes “in response to a legal demand”, as per the message displayed on Reuters’s X handle. Notably, only the official X account of the global news agency as well as Reuters World handles are inaccessible in the country. Affiliated X handles such as Reuters Tech News, Reuters Fact Check, Reuters Asia, and Reuters China are still accessible. Users attempting to access the Reuters account on X are now seeing a message that reads: "Account withheld. @ Reuters has been withheld in IN in response to a legal demand."
According to the PTI report, government officials have denied raising any legal demand to withhold the news agency’s account in the country. Instead, they have sought ‘explanation from X for blocking Reuters account.’
Request to block Reuters account made during Operation Sindoor
Official sources told the news agency that a request to block Reuters' account was made during Operation Sindoor. The microblogging platform seems to have now acted on that request and blocked Reuters' account in the country, officials said. They further added that since the issue isn't relevant now, the government has asked Elon Musk's X to explain the blocking and lift the embargo.
"An order was issued on May 7 (during Operation Sindoor) but it was not enforced. X seems to have enforced that order now which is a mistake on their part. Government has reached out to X for resolving it at the earliest," an official source told PTI.
