Mangaluru: 115 government schools in Dakshina Kannada get approval to introduce English medium classes
Mangaluru: In a move aimed at enhancing English language skills among rural students, the Karnataka government has approved the introduction of English medium classes alongside Kannada medium in 4,134 government primary schools across the state for the 2025-26 academic year. As part of this initiative, 115 government schools in Dakshina Kannada district have received permission to start English medium instruction from Class 1.
This decision is intended to help students develop English proficiency while continuing their education in their mother tongue.
Schools with the highest student enrolment in each taluk and education zone were prioritised. If no such schools were available, other schools with adequate local resources were considered. The government will appoint additional teachers once the recruitment process is complete to meet the demand in selected schools.
The approved distribution of English medium classes across education zones in Dakshina Kannada includes 20 schools in Puttur zone, 19 in Bantwal zone, 17 in Belthangady zone, 15 in Sullia zone, and 15 in Mangaluru North zone.
The English medium classes will begin from Class 1 in all the selected schools using existing infrastructure and local resources.
