Mangaluru: Kadri Park suffers from poor maintenance despite major development

Mangaluru: Once considered the pride of Mangaluru, Kadri Park—known for its scenic attractions—is now drawing criticism due to poor maintenance. While the park’s outer premises continue to attract visitors, its interior paints a starkly different picture.

Most facilities inside the park are in a state of disrepair. Despite having a designated play area for children, most play equipment is broken or rusted. The open gym installed with Mangaluru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) funds has become unusable, with many machines rusting or damaged. Public restrooms are locked, and visitors also complain about stray dog menace.

The open gym, constructed seven years ago under MUDA’s initiative at a cost of over ₹1.5 crore, is no longer functional. Although the park underwent significant upgrades, frequent administrative lapses have left it in neglect. Lack of coordination between MUDA and the Horticulture Department has contributed to its decline.

Equipment rusting and broken

Within the 16-acre park, crores worth of infrastructure are falling apart due to lack of upkeep. Residents allege the use of substandard materials. Children’s rides like swings, arm wheels, slides, seesaws, and other installations are either rusted or hanging broken. Littered plastic bottles and piles of garbage are common sights.

No responsible maintenance

The Horticulture Department is currently responsible for managing the park, including its greenery and amenities. While MUDA constructed the gym, neither body has taken up consistent maintenance. Each department deflects responsibility onto the other. Earlier, MLAs and district officials used to hold review meetings on park development, which no longer take place.

Unsafe play area for children
The area designated for children’s play is in shambles. The sand flooring has washed away, and rainwater accumulation makes it unsafe. Parents now hesitate to send their children to play there. Ironically, plastic waste has piled up around the park despite boards prohibiting its use. The compost being used for greenery is itself packed in plastic bags, contradicting the park’s eco-friendly messaging.

Officials respond
“We are working on internal maintenance and prioritizing greenery. Issues reported by the public will be addressed soon. The gym was built using MUDA funds and maintenance instructions have been issued,” said Manjunath D., Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department.

Public opinion
“The park is suffering due to lack of proper management. If handed over to private contractors, it could be better maintained and generate revenue, allowing families to enjoy peaceful outings,” suggested Suresh, a Mangaluru resident.
