BHOPAL: A 28-year-old woman from Indore died under suspicious circumstances late Sunday night in a forested stretch near Dhohni Road under the Sarai police station area of Singrauli district in Madhya Pradesh.

The deceased has been identified as Riya Rai and was pillion riding her husband Dilip Jaiswal , who escaped with minor injuries and has claimed it was an accident. They were travelling from Indore to Singrauli on a bike - a distance of nearly 903 km.

However, Riya’s family has alleged that she was murdered, and police say initial findings suggest foul play.

According to police, Riya and Dilip had been in a relationship since 2019. During that time, Riya had filed a rape case against Dilip, for which he remained in jail for three months. However, she later helped him secure bail, and the two eventually married through court on 28 September 2019 in Jabalpur. They had been living together since.

About a month ago, the couple travelled to Indore, where Riya's brother lives. From there, they left on a motorcycle on July 4 to return to their native village Barka in Singrauli.

According to the timeline provided by Riya’s brother to police, the couple left Indore at 10:30 am on July 4, reached Bhopal by 3 pm, and Jabalpur by 9:30 pm the same day, where they stayed overnight at a hotel. They informed the family that they would resume their journey the next morning.

On July 6, Riya last spoke to her mother around 8 pm, saying they would reach Singrauli by around 11–12 pm.

At 10:45 pm, Ricky spoke to Dilip, who said they were still at a residence and were about to leave after having tea.

Around 11:30 pm, Dilip called again to say they had met with an accident. Riya was found dead in the nearby forest. Her body bore marks of strangulation and scratches on her neck, along with a head injury suspected to have been caused by a heavy object.

Police said Dilip had no significant injuries.

Riya’s mother, Renu Rai, alleged that her daughter was murdered by Dilip. Her brother, Ricky, added that Dilip used to harass Riya during their stay in Indore and restricted her contact with her family.

His family also used to call him and insist he leave Riya and return home. There were regular disputes between them, he claimed. Riya was supposed to join a government school as a guest teacher on Monday morning, which is why the couple had planned to return to Singrauli.

Sarai police claims that the case appears suspicious. While the husband claims it was an accident, he has no injury marks, whereas Riya has signs of strangulation and nail scratches on her neck. There's also a head injury caused by a blunt object.

A postmortem was conducted on Monday morning by a team of doctors.
