Breaking barriers: Sandhya Shah is the first woman promoted as train loco pilot in Ferozepur Division.

FEROZEPUR: In a proud milestone for women empowerment in Indian Railways, Sandhya Shah has become the first woman employee in the Ferozepur Division of Northern Railway to be promoted as a Train Loco Pilot (Goods). This significant achievement marks a new chapter in the division’s efforts toward gender inclusively in operational roles traditionally dominated by men.

Sandhya, now not just driving trains, she is steering change and breaking barriers.

Sandhya Shah, who holds a Diploma in Electronics Engineering, was selected by the Railway Recruitment Board, Jammu in 2016 for the post of Assistant Loco Pilot. After completing her training, she was appointed to the Ludhiana headquarters under Ferozepur Division.

On June 28, 2025, Sandhya independently operated a freight train, marking her official promotion to the post of Loco Pilot. She was accompanied during duty by another woman Assistant Loco Pilot, Ms. Aarti, and Chief Loco Inspector Harminder Singh. This event not only celebrates Sandhya’s individual achievement but also reflects the growing role of women in frontline railway operations.

While advocating women empowerment beyond the tracks, she actively ngaged in initiatives promoting gender equality and encouraging young girls to aspire for career beyond conventional boundaries. “My journey is not without its share of challenges and sacrifices, balancing work and family, especially in a profession demanding irregular hours and long journeys, she aid adding that her ability to navigate through these challenges with grace and determination underscores the strength of women in multiple roles.
