BHOPAL: A 24-year-old man, who was allegedly injured in a knife attack during a minor altercation at Ambedkar Park near Nehru Market in Govindpura two days ago, died while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Hospital on Saturday.

The violent altercation, which began over a misunderstanding involving the accused’s girlfriend, escalated quickly. Two friends of the deceased were also injured in the attack.

Govindpura police registered a case in the matter, and charges of murder were upgraded after the death of the injured.

Govindpura SHO Awadhesh Singh Tomar said that the deceased, Shyam More, 24, a resident of Barkheda Pathani, worked as a labour contractor in BHEL. He, along with his two friends, including Sunil and Ajay, went to Ambedkar Park on Thursday evening. They received payment on the same day and went to the park to sit and have beer.

The accused, identified as Faizan, a resident of Piplani and a second-year ITI student, also went to the park with his girlfriend, a third-year computer science engineering student.

Shyam and his friends were laughing and joking when Faizan and his girlfriend, sitting on a nearby bench, suspected that they were the subject of inappropriate comments. This led to a heated exchange between Shyam and Faizan.

The argument escalated, and Faizan allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Shyam in the chest. When Ajay and Sunil tried to intervene, Faizan attacked them as well. Shyam was bleeding profusely. He was rushed to AIIMS Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment on Saturday.

SHO Tomar said that acting on a complaint filed by Shyam's friend Ajay, Govindpura police registered a case on charges of assault against Faizan. After receiving medical reports, more serious charges were added.

Following Shyam’s death, police upgraded the charges to include murder under relevant sections of BNS. The weapon used in the crime has been recovered, and Faizan is currently in custody.

The incident has sparked outrage among local residents, who gathered at Govindpura Police Station demanding strict action against the accused.

Police are also investigating the role of the girl who was with Faizan at the time of the incident. Preliminary inquiry suggests that their families were aware of their relationship.

Police are working to determine whether the girl had any active involvement in the incident.

Police said further interrogation of the accused is ongoing, and more details will emerge once his statement is thoroughly recorded.
