MUMBAI: MUMBAI: A 17-year-old girl’s mysterious death, initially believed to be a suicide, has now been confirmed as a case of murder, with her minor male friend confessing to pushing her from the terrace of a 32-storey residential building in Bhandup on June 24.

The deceased, a resident of Mulund East, was found critically injured near D Wing of a Bhandup housing society. She succumbed to her injuries at Mulund General Hospital shortly after.

While the case was initially registered as an unnatural death under BNNS Section 194, inconsistencies in the suspect’s narrative prompted a deeper probe.

CCTV footage revealed the victim entering the society premises with the accused at 6.18pm, both heading to the 32nd floor. Minutes later, the accused was seen descending alone and visiting the society gym, showing no signs of urgency or shock.

Further suspicion arose when the victim’s mobile phone was recovered under a different wing (E Wing), far from the terrace area. Investigators suspect the accused threw the phone to mislead the investigation.

Initially, the boy told police the girl had jumped off the terrace, upset over academic stress and bullying. However, after being confronted with the evidence and inconsistencies, he confessed: the two had met through Instagram, developed a friendship, and the girl had recently proposed a relationship.

When she again brought up the topic during their meeting, an argument escalated into a physical altercation. The accused claimed she pushed him first, and in retaliation, he pushed her off the terrace in a moment of rage.

He also admitted to throwing her mobile phone post-incident and later tampering with the society register to cover his tracks. A local resident told police she heard a loud commotion coming from the terrace moments before the tragedy.

Police have now booked the minor under IPC Section 103(1) (murder) and Section 238 (destruction of evidence). His confession was videographed in the presence of two panch witnesses. The post-mortem cited shock due to multiple injuries as the cause of death. Viscera and other samples have been preserved for forensic analysis.
